That end of year exhaustion feeling
The younger two kids and I arrived in Mildura yesterday afternoon. I honestly cannot remember a time when I have felt happier to be back here. I am not sure if it is because
for so much of this year, I couldn't leave my 5km bubble let alone travel 550km, or
it is just so good to see my family again, or
if it was because the two weeks leading up to coming were really full on with work and family and the pace here is so different, or
if it is because the sky seems even bluer than I remembered and it makes my soul sing.
It is probably a combination of all of the above and I am grateful for it all. Grateful that I have an amazing sister to stay with and her family are the best hosts you could ask for. Grateful that the our youngest is currently spending time with his grandparents while I work at the local library. Grateful that I could run by the river this morning and grateful that my daughter back in Melbourne is processing all my Adapt Drinks orders for me!
If you are beginning to get that end of year exhaustion feeling (I certainly was before I left Melbourne!), hang in there. You have done an amazing job this year navigating your family through a challenging and unpredictable year. Now is the time to make things as easy as possible for yourself where you can like:
Buy a roast chicken and rolls for dinner instead of making dinner
Getting the kids on school holidays to do some extra tasks around the house to help you
Deciding to stay home because you are tired instead of going out
Going to bed as early as you can
Delegating tasks to family members to help get ready for Christmas day
I know it is easier said than done for some of us but remind yourself frequently about what it is that people remember about this time of year. It isn’t that the house is perfect, it isn’t that you plated the meals so well you would have won Masterchef. But it is things like you sat down and talked and enjoyed each other’s company. It was that you sat back and laughed as the kids played. It was that you made the family favourite dessert that everyone loves.
Being kinder to yourself means you can show up better for others at this time of year.
Take care,
Nic
