Watching, listening and reading recommendations 2022 - part 1
Happy Friday! I hope you have had a great week. A slight change from the usual format of my Friday newsletter. Normally I share a reflection, tip or strategy to help with working on your goals and then share some things that I have either watched, listened to, or read and think you will like.
In today’s edition, I have collated almost all the recommendations I have made this year so you can have them in one place for a handy reference! On top of things to watch, listen to and read I have also shared Instagram posts or accounts to follow but I thought this email was getting long enough without them so I will create a separate list for them at another time.
There are 13 recommendations of things to watch, 21 listening recommendations and 9 reading recommendations - enjoy!
After the list, you will find my review for the week and see how I have progressed (or didn’t!) with the tasks I set.
Watching
Instagram Reel - Nine short rules for a better life - Ryan Holiday - a succinct on some key ways we can make our lives better.
Video - the pace of modern life versus our cavewoman biochemistry: Dr Libby Weaver at TEDxQueenstown - I have watched this TED talk before but a snippet came up on Instagram this week and it is still relevant.
TV series - Space 22 - started this year on the ABC. The series follows seven strangers, each with their own lived experience of mental ill health, as they take part in an ambitious experiment to test if the simple act of participating in art can help heal invisible wounds. I found it to be beautifully put together and a tender look and people who are really suffering.
Documentary series - Wild Babies - this is a super cute and beautifully filmed series. Over the eight episodes, it follows the adventures of baby lions, elephants, penguins, pangolins, and more as they learn to navigate the highs and lows of life in the wild.
Video - 10 min Morning Yoga Stretch - Intermediate Full Body Yoga - I am loving this short yoga session. I feel so much better after I do it every single time.
Documentary - Another Country - The great Australian Aboriginal actor David Dalaithngu tells the tale of 'Another Country', a story of what happened when his people's way of life was interrupted by ours. I did enjoy this doco but I have to admit to finding it slow. I think this is an indictment on me and not the film. The film pauses between commentary to show beautiful scenes of nature, scenes of living conditions, etc. which is important. Dalaithngu at one point talks about how white fella time is different and that made me reflect on why did I find the doco slow.
TV Show - Women Of Steel - This is a very inspiring doco. Outraged at sexual harassment in the workplace and denied work at the local steelworks, a group of women banded together and launch a 14 year battle against Australia's biggest company.
TV Series - Art Works - Series 2 Episode 1 Summer Arts Festivals, Art-Washing - In this episode, they look at three of Australia's summer arts festivals in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney, and they discuss the concept of 'art-washing': when organisations, individuals and even countries use art to distract from negative actions.
TV Series - Life On The Outside - this is a great new show on SBS showing an initiative in Sydney to tackle recidivism - a person's relapse into criminal behaviour. It follows four Australian households that are prepared to offer their spare room to a formerly incarcerated person for 100 days.
Video - Intergenerational Trauma Animation - this short video (4 mins) is beautifully animated and explains simply and powerfully how if people are not allowed to heal from their trauma it is passed on to the next generation.
Video - Parkinson’s Law: How to Manage Your Time More Effectively - an excellent 7 minute video on why some of us leave things to the last minute and what to do about it.
Video - National Press Club Address - Brittany Higgins and Grace Tame - you probably have already watched it but just in case you haven’t it is really worth a watch.
TV Series - First Australians - this is an excellent documentary series on SBS on Demand. I am embarrassed to say that I learnt so much from this series. It was such an eye opener to me and as a nation, we have so far to go to acknowledge the harm we caused to the First Nation Peoples and work towards proper reconciliation.
