How boundaries can save you from burnout
Good morning!
I hope you are keeping well and safe. It is pretty hectic out there at the moment. Thank you so much to the many of you who replied via email in response to my newsletter last week. It was wonderful to hear that so many of you found the information helpful. If you missed it you can read it here, just scroll down past my goal and habits.
And talking of habits, one of the habits I am focusing on this year is committing to reading every day. I have started off strongly! I do find this time of the year much easier to fit in time for reading though so am aware the challenge will come when the kids get back to school and all the activities start up.
I finished reading Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself by Nedra Glover Tawwab last week and have written a short review on the blog here. Anytime would be a great time to read this book but if you are in the process of setting your goal for the year, now is an especially great time to read this book. I am not always fantastic at setting boundaries and it is something I am working on to become better at. I found this book super helpful in terms of how to think about boundaries and loved the practical examples of what good boundaries look like.
It has been many years since I have felt burnt out but I still remember how that felt (it was awful) and it wasn’t until reading Set Boundaries, Find Peace that I realised in my case it was caused by not having great boundaries with others and myself. Tawwab shares in the book that burnout is caused by:
Not knowing when to say no
Not knowing how to say no
Prioiritising others over yourself
People-pleasing
Superhero syndrome (“I can do it all”)
Unrealistic expectations
Not being appreciated for what you do.
I am starting 2022 with some firm boundaries for myself and working on creating healthy boundaries in other areas of my life too.
Do you find setting boundaries challenging? I would love to hear about your experience.
